Biography:

Mark was born and educated in Glasgow before moving to Edinburgh to pursue his medical studies. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1998 and completed five years of basic surgical training in Edinburgh. In 2001, he became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh after passing his general surgical examinations. He then spent five years as a Specialist Registrar on the North of Scotland Trauma and Orthopaedic Rotation. In 2007, Mark passed the Intercollegiate Trauma and Orthopaedic Exam, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

In July 2008, Mark was appointed as an Advanced Hand Trainee by the Interface Group in Hand Surgery at Oxford, training with internationally recognized surgeons including Peter Burge, Henk Geile, Ian McNab, Paul Critchley, and Chris Little. From January to October 2009, he completed a further Interface-appointed Advanced Hand Training Post at Wrightington Hospital, working with Professor John Stanley, Ian Trail, Mike Hayton, and Professor Raj Murali.

Mark is now an established Hand and Upper Limb Surgeon in the West of Scotland. He practices within the NHS at Inverclyde Royal Hospital and The Royal Alexandra Hospital, managing both local patients and tertiary referrals. Since 2009, he has also run private clinics at Ross Hall Hospital and the Nuffield Hospital.




Clinical Interests:

Mark is a Hand and Upper Limb Orthopaedic and Trauma Consultant with expertise in both acute upper limb trauma and elective procedures. He specialises in complex wrist pathology, including trauma, ligament injuries, wrist replacements, partial fusions, and sports injuries. He has extensive experience in the management of Dupuytren’s Disease and has conducted research into minimally invasive procedures.

His routine procedures include:

  1. Open reduction and internal fixation of fractures of the hand, wrist, elbow, clavicle, and shoulder
  2. Flexor and extensor tendon repair, transfer, grafting, and reconstruction
  3. Trigger finger release, tendon release, De Quervain’s release, tenosynovectomy, and tenolysis
  4. Carpal tunnel release, injections, and revision surgery
  5. Ulnar nerve decompression and transposition
  6. Aspiration, excision, and biopsy of hand swellings, ganglions, mucous cysts, and giant cell tumors
  7. Dupuytren’s contracture treatment: fasciotomy and fasciectomy
  8. Wrist ligament repair and reconstruction
  9. Scaphoid fracture fixation, fracture non-union reconstruction, and bone grafting
  10. Corrective osteotomy and fixation for mal-union of fractures
  11. Small joint and wrist replacements, including STT arthrodesis, excision arthroplasty, proximal row carpectomy, and total wrist replacement or fusion
  12. Thumb carpometacarpal and metacarpophalangeal joint procedures and joint replacements
  13. Tennis and golfer’s elbow surgery (TOPAZ)
  14. Shoulder arthroscopy
